Daniel Ruggles was confined to administrative duties for most of the war. His beard? That could never be confined.

Though born in Massachusetts, Daniel Ruggles rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. He led a division at Shiloh where he partook in the breaking of the Hornets Nest. Of Ruggles, Ulysses S. Grant once said: “If Ruggles is in command at Corinth, now is the time to attack.”
