Though born in Massachusetts, Daniel Ruggles rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. He led a division at Shiloh where he partook in the breaking of the Hornets Nest. Of Ruggles, Ulysses S. Grant once said: “If Ruggles is in command at Corinth, now is the time to attack.”
